  • Summer 2009 So Far

    by Josh Roth @ 6:26 pm June 7th, 2009

    summer091

Boy do I love the summer. Not only is it a time to kick back and relax by the pool, but it’s also when we get some of the biggest, most anticipated movies of the whole year. We’re about a month into the summer movie season and I wanted to give you guys a wrap up of my thoughts of how the summer’s been shaping up, cinematically.

  • Clive Owen Can Kick Your Bank’s Ass, ‘The International’ Review

    by Josh Roth @ 8:50 pm February 16th, 2009

    theinternational.jpg

The International, starring Clive Owen as a renegade Interpol agent, had some very misleading, and frankly awful trailers and ads. Tom Tykwer, who directed the bizarre, stylized, German action film Run, Lola, Run, added some much needed style to the decent script, and Clive Owen brought his typical brooding bad-assery. As it turns out, The International isn’t as mediocre or ‘Hollywood’ as the ads made it out to be. It’s actually a pretty compelling action/thriller with moments of serious greatness (there’s a shootout in the Guggenheim, and damn is it incredible).

  • Have a Bloody Good Time at My Bloody Valentine 3D

    by Josh Roth @ 10:05 pm January 18th, 2009

    mybloodyvalentine.jpg

One of the more irritating trends in recent films is the menagerie of horror remakes the studios have been trotting out in an attempt to wipe out the world’s creativity. At first My Bloody Valentine 3D seems to be another one of these, but it isn’t really. Bloody Valentine is more of a classic 80’s slasher flick than it is a modern horror remake. It’s not torture porn, or a psychological thriller, what it is is straight up blood and guts horror…and in 3D no less. Within 20 minutes you have at least two very gory massacres, in 3D. If you’re looking for old school straight up fun horror, look no further. My Bloody Valentine 3D has it in spades, plus, it’s in 3D!

  • The Most Underrated Films of 2008

    by Josh Roth @ 12:02 am December 29th, 2008

    underrated081

2008 was a humongous year for movies. We had big superhero films like The Dark Knight and Iron Man, blockbuster comedies like Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express, animated films like Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda…and the list goes on. But those weren’t the only good films to come out this year, there were some terrific overlooked gems that I wanted to touch upon right now. Hopefully you’ll find something here you may enjoy that you missed over the past year. Most of these films are available now on DVD.

  • Tropic Thunder is an Unbelievable Thrill Ride of Awesome

    by Josh Roth @ 9:36 pm August 17th, 2008

Tropic Thunder’s trailers made it out to be a new high in the genre of Hollywood comedies. That’s quite a high standard to appease, but luckily Tropic Thunder comes out smelling like restroom soap. It’s an action comedy war movie directed/written/starring Ben Stiller, and starring Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson; with guest appearances by Steve Coogan, Nick Nolte, Matthew McConaughey, Bill Hader, AND Tom Cruise. How could you possibly go wrong? Simply put, Tropic Thunder is a comedy masterpiece, filled to the brim with genius parodies and cameos, and enough action to make John McClaine choke. The action is beautifully executed, and the comedy doubly so. This is a real gem of a comedy, and easily the funniest movie of the summer, and more than likely the whole year.

  • To Suprise of None The Dark Knight Shocks and Awes, Best Superhero Film Yet

    by Josh Roth @ 6:57 pm July 21st, 2008

Batman and the JokerI watched every trailer, every clip, and every interview available for The Dark Knight, I even delved into the viral campaign for a bit (had tickets to the free IMAX pre-screening, but I had my wisdom teeth out, great luck eh?), and I’m proud to say this movie still knocked me on my ass with surprise. At the midnight show for The Dark Knight the feeling in the air was unbelievable, the sheer excitement could power a small country for a week. When the Warner Bros. logo flew out of that fog the crowd exploded, and was dead silent for the next of the 2 and a half hours. This film will leave you speechless and in awe, and that’s what a great film is supposed to do, show you something you’ve never seen before. “It’s not about making money, it’s about sending a message.” – Joker

  • Del Toro Outdoes Himself with Creatures, Monsters, and Giant Golden Robots in Hellboy 2

    by Josh Roth @ 3:49 pm July 11th, 2008

Guillermo del Toro is a true artist with a camera, and a cool guy to boot. Del Toro is a huge fan of the Hellboy comics, written by Mike Mignola, so when he brought Hellboy to the big screen, it was a perfect adaption to the comics. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army picks up where the last one left off, with Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) (John Myers is MIA because the actor, Rupert Evans was busy with the stage) kicking supernatural out of the BPRD in New Jersey. I was a huge fan of the first Hellboy, thanks to its perfect mix of sci-fi and fantasy. Then del Toro brought us Pan’s Labyrinth, which blew most people away. I definitely enjoyed it, but meh. And now Hellboy 2, which gives us the best of Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth, del Toro’s brilliant vision is perfectly executed in this excellent sequel to one of my favorite sci-fi films.
