BBC America HD Launches for Nobody

A few weeks ago it was announced that BBC America would finally start broadcasting in HD starting on July 20th, the problem is the deadline came and went without any sign of the channel launching. Well, BBC America released a statement saying their channel is indeed in HD now…but that no cable providers are carrying it. Effectively, they are broadcasting to no one.

A Vampire, a Werewolf, and a Ghost Live Together in ‘Being Human’

Why are BBC shows consistently better than most US shows? Doctor Who, Torchwood, Life on Mars (the original, UK version), and now Being Human. I think the answer is because they take risks. I could never imagine a US network (even a cable one) green lighting Doctor Who or Being Human, they’re just too out there, too original. Get this, in Being Human a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost share a house in Bristol, each trying to figure out how to survive as supernaturals in a human world. Being Human feels like a modern descendant of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel, at its heart its a clever character drama in the guise of horror. You can catch Being Human on BBC Three in the UK and on BBC America when it hits the States later this year.

The Proms are a series of summer concerts at Royal Albert Hall in in London, held and recorded by the BBC. Last July the BBC held a Doctor Who Prom, featuring music from the series composed by Murray Gold. And there’s an exclusive Doctor Who scene featuring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor! The Doctor Who Prom is a fantastic celebration of the wonderful music and creature design of Doctor Who.

Matt Smith Announced as the Eleventh Doctor, And Why It’s NOT the End of Doctor Who

I won’t lie and say I wasn’t a little disappointed by the BBC’s announcement that actor Matt Smith would be the Eleventh Doctor. A 26 year old white man isn’t exactly all that surprising or exciting, I suppose I was expecting something a bit different, or an actor I was familiar with, or both. I was hoping for Paterson Joseph or James Nesbitt, instead I got what I thought was a Twilight reject…but after watching interviews with Steven Moffat, and Matt Smith himself I’ve become more optimistic about this Eleventh Doctor, if only a little. -
A Very Steampunk Doctor Who Christmas

What could possibly be more fun than one Doctor fighting steampunk Cybermen on Christmas? How about two Doctors fighting steampunk Cybermen on Christmas!! David Morrissey guest stars as the next Doctor who has lost his memories of his past incarnations, complete with his own companion, sonic screwdriver, and TARDIS. David Tennant is wonderful as always, and Morrissey holds his own. All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas adventure. Beware of spoilers ahead. -
Why David Tennant is the Greatest Doctor Ever, and One Hell of an Act to Follow

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sorry I haven’t posted so long, but it took some grim news on the sci-fi front to shake me out of my blogging coma. A few weeks ago the BBC officially announced that David Tennant was leaving Doctor Who after the pitifully short 4 episode “season” in 2009. I’ve been mulling over how I feel about this news over the past few weeks, I tried to be optimistic and say that Tennant’s reign had to come to an end eventually, but I’ve concluded that this is grim news indeed. David Tennant encompasses everything wonderful about all previous incarnations of the Doctor. He is and will always be my Doctor. His performance inspired and wowed me time and time again, I started wearing canvas and navy converse because of him (geeky I know). Tennant’s Tenth Doctor is curious and enthusiastic in ways we haven’t seen in the Doctor before. I’m not saying it will be impossible to best Tennant’s Doctor, but whoever takes the reigns best be prepared. -
The Doctor Avoids Spoilers and Fights Shadows in Steven Moffat’s Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead!!

I am literally shaking from excitement at the end of this weeks episode of Doctor Who. Since this is the first non-announcement post on Nerdgasmic, I’d like to express my aboslute love for everything Doctor Who, both old and new. Since the re-boot of Doctor Who started back in 2005 episodes written by Steven Moffat (such as The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, and Blink) have been consistently incredible. And of course his two parter this season, Silence in the Library (last week) and Forest of the Dead (this week), is no exception. Moffat is a perfect writer for Doctor Who, he is an expert at creating and expanding the wonderful mythology behind the show, the science fiction and fantasy aspects, while keeping the characters exciting and deep. This season’s two parter from Steven Moffat may just be the best episodes since the show returned.
