Doctor Who Goes to the Prom, Featuring a New Scene with The Doctor

Not the Prom you’re thinking of, with limos, drunk teenagers, and party buses. The Proms are a series of summer concerts at Royal Albert Hall in in London, held and recorded by the BBC. Last July the BBC held a Doctor Who Prom, featuring music from the series composed by Murray Gold. And there’s an exclusive Doctor Who scene featuring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor! The Doctor Who Prom is a fantastic celebration of the wonderful music and creature design of Doctor Who.
Obviously Doctor Who is far more popular in the UK than it is here in the States. Across the pond it’s an absolute sensation and very much a part of the culture. Thus the BBC puts their all into making it the most well produced show on British television, and it truly is. Every aspect of the show reaches a feature film level of production, most especially the music.
Music makes a production feel professional, and the music to Doctor Who is simply beautiful. Murray Gold is a very gifted composer, all of his various tracks are instantly recognizable and addicting, but listening to the orchestra playing the music in front of a live audience made me really appreciate just how great the sh0w’s score is.
To add to the excitement of the Doctor Who Prom, actors donned the various creature suits and costumes and walked right out into the audience during the show! There were Cybermen, Ood, Judoon, and Daleks moving throughout the crowds of excited adults and slightly frightened children. And the Doctor Who crew recorded an exclusive scene written by Russell T Davies. In it the Doctor is composing his own symphony, when a space portal rips open in the TARDIS leading directly to the Doctor Who Prom. Then the Doctor gets to conduct the orchestra in playing his “Ode to the Universe”, with a very cool bit of audience interaction. It was a terrifically fun sketch, and it’s always great to see David playing the Doctor.
If you’re even remotely a fan of the show I encourage you to seek this out, and fall in love with Doctor Who all over again.
