The Most Underrated TV Shows of 2008
by Josh Roth @ 11:59 am December 30th, 2008
Since we’re nearing the end of 2008, I wanted to take this opportunity to present four shows that you may or may not already be a fan of, but which have, by and large, been overlooked by the public. Some are network shows, some are on cable, and some of them aren’t meant for everyone. Who knows, maybe you’ll find something wonderful to fill that extra space on your DVR with.

The Most Underrated Films of 2008
by Josh Roth @ 12:02 am December 29th, 2008
2008 was a humongous year for movies. We had big superhero films like The Dark Knight and Iron Man, blockbuster comedies like Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express, animated films like Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda…and the list goes on. But those weren’t the only good films to come out this year, there were some terrific overlooked gems that I wanted to touch upon right now. Hopefully you’ll find something here you may enjoy that you missed over the past year. Most of these films are available now on DVD.

ABC Kills Pushing Daisies, Further Proves Ignorance of Network TV
by Josh Roth @ 1:34 pm December 28th, 2008
Let’s be honest with ourselves, it was nothing short of a miracle that Pushing Daisies was renewed for a second season in the first place. But that doesn’t mean it was any less devastating to find out that it wasn’t being picked up for a whole season this year. It’s a perfect example of a show that is too good for network television. It’s heartwarming, charming, clever, and tragic all in the span of one hour-long episode. I have been watching the show religiously since I caught the pilot early two summers ago. I shouldn’t be surprised that in a world where Dollhouse is given a Friday ‘death slot’, and shows like TMZ are renewed for another two seasons, that gems like Pushing Daisies get shafted, but I think the fact that this show survived for two seasons make its death that much more tragic. -
A Very Steampunk Doctor Who Christmas
by Josh Roth @ 1:35 pm December 27th, 2008
What could possibly be more fun than one Doctor fighting steampunk Cybermen on Christmas? How about two Doctors fighting steampunk Cybermen on Christmas!! David Morrissey guest stars asĀ the next Doctor who has lost his memories of his past incarnations, complete with his own companion, sonic screwdriver, and TARDIS. David Tennant is wonderful as always, and Morrissey holds his own. All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas adventure. Beware of spoilers ahead. -

David Tennant Says There’s Talk of Doctor Who: The Musical!!
by Josh Roth @ 12:42 am December 24th, 2008
I am an unabashed fan of musicals, and also an unabashed fan of Doctor Who, so the idea of a Doctor Who musical is right up my alley. Recently David Tennant said there was talk over at the BBC of having one of the upcoming specials be a musical, and that John Barrowman (Captain Jack) was really the only other interested cast member. This would fulfill all of my wildest Doctor Who related dreams, but only if they did it right. Something along the lines of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog would be fantastic, and I’m sure a hit with the fans, myself included. -
Cartoon Genius Paul Dini Dreams of an Animated Indiana Jones!!
by Josh Roth @ 6:07 pm December 23rd, 2008
OK this isn’t so much as news as it is a rumor of a dream. Paul Dini has produced and written some of the best cartoons to air on television. He’s worked on Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and many more. In an interview with TheForce.net the other day Dini mentioned that a cartoon of Indiana Jones done the classic style of Max Fleischer’s classic 1940′s Superman cartoons would be a major hit. -

Buffy: The Animated Series Gives Us a Break from Our Usually Scheduled Season Eight
by Josh Roth @ 8:43 pm December 18th, 2008
A few months ago the spec pilot for Buffy: The Animated Series leaked onto the web, stirring interest in the dead project. Jeph Loeb, famed TV and Comic producer/writer, worked with Joss to bring Buffy back to our screens starting in 2001 and continuing through 2005. Most the cast were ready to reprise their roles (expect Sarah Michelle Gellar who was too busy making Japanese horror remakes and Scooby Doo), and many of the original series writers were on board. But surprisingly no network wanted to ‘risk’ picking up the series…well their loss and our eventual gain. This week’s Buffy comic is a small preview of what the series would have been like, and it is simply wonderful. Loeb is able to capture the charming nature of the first few seasons and spice it up with bits and pieces of Season Eight goodness. Nothing in this week’s comic really propels the overall season arc along…but that’s OK, because what it does offer is a delightful look into the realm of what could have (and what maybe someday will possibly) been. -
Why David Tennant is the Greatest Doctor Ever, and One Hell of an Act to Follow
by Josh Roth @ 1:08 am December 15th, 2008
Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sorry I haven’t posted so long, but it took some grim news on the sci-fi front to shake me out of my blogging coma. A few weeks ago the BBC officially announced that David Tennant was leaving Doctor Who after the pitifully short 4 episode “season” in 2009. I’ve been mulling over how I feel about this news over the past few weeks, I tried to be optimistic and say that Tennant’s reign had to come to an end eventually, but I’ve concluded that this is grim news indeed. David Tennant encompasses everything wonderful about all previous incarnations of the Doctor. He is and will always be my Doctor. His performance inspired and wowed me time and time again, I started wearing canvas and navy converse because of him (geeky I know). Tennant’s Tenth Doctor is curious and enthusiastic in ways we haven’t seen in the Doctor before. I’m not saying it will be impossible to best Tennant’s Doctor, but whoever takes the reigns best be prepared.
